I saw this buck 3 weeks ago when we got rained out. He was on the wrong side of the creek about 40 yards from my stand. Also a 150 buck on the same trail. I sat that stand last mon evening when I got over there. Those suckers came down the same trail and this buck smelled me and trotted back to the north. At noon the next day-tues, I put a portable stand across the creek about 15 yards from the trail as the wind seemed to be from the west most of the time. I sat from 2pm and saw quite a few does moving around 4:30. At 5pm I heard a deer running up behind me. When I turned around to look I could just see a deer butt down in the creek about 25 yards behind me and could hear it slurping up the water. It then jumped up the bank and I about had heart failure when I saw it was the big guy. He trotted over to the doe pee set and started smelling it. I was going nuts as a tree covered his vitals. He stayed right there sniffing for 4 or 5 hours-really 30 seconds or so and then took 2 steps forward still sniffing the pee. He saw me draw but it was too late. I hit him high behind the last rib and angled it down into the heart. He blasted back the way he came and at 100yds did a buck and turned 90 degrees to the east. I thought that was a good indication of a heart shot. I followed 30 minutes later and there was very little blood as I knew the cavity would have to fill before it came out the arrow shaft. It got dark so I waited til Wed morning and was back at daylight. A rough nite as I thought a million different things about not finding him. Very hard to follow, but 150 yards further there was blood everywhere and he plowed down into a 60' deep gulley so I had to cut him up to get him out. I sure was on cloud 9 and still am. Here's a couple more photos.

Hey King,
Another close encounter that ended with a dandy. This Ontario bruin pushed 600 pounds. He never looked my direction and never heard a thing at very close range. |

The new Bunlite pants and Frontier shirt worked great with the new Tamarack pattern. I stayed very comfortable in 36 degree temperatures with just my Frontier shirt, Bunlites and light weight long underwear. |

Camo doesn't always have to come in a variety of earth tones to be effective.
When you're hunting Pronghorn on waterholes out of a Double Bull blind, your most effective camo color is black. This year the SD "goat" season arrived with cooler than normal temperatures which of course brought wind and rain in tow.
Before the planned hunt I had received the new KOM Conceal & Carry vest.
Man was I ever glad to have that piece of gear along on this hunt! It kept me warm enough throughout the cold, windy weather to grind out the time it took to get a shot at this awesome Pronghorn. And whats more...when he finally rolled in at just thirty yards and looked directly in the blind, my cameraman and I were completely invisible...
Thanks KOM for doing your part to help me SLAM another good one!

King, I love the brown pattern for late fall tree stand hunting after the leaves fall because it blends perfectly with tree bark! Come to think of it, this stuff blends with everything except snow! I wear it all year long for all my hunting. If you only made pajamas, I'd be wearing it 24 hours a day! |
